The Medical Administrative Assistant program provides students with the opportunity to develop skills in administration fields, thus increasing their employment opportunities. The program is designed to provide students with medical administrative assistant skills, as well as the business, technology and communication expertise needed to work in a private physician’s office, clinic, hospital, or nursing home. Emphasis is placed on medical terminology, medical office procedures, body systems and transcription.

Medical Terminology 100 – 12 Weeks
This course will examine the formation of medical words by using prefixes, suffixes, root words and combining forms. Students will examine the medical words to understand their meanings, their pronunciation and their spelling. Students will study anatomical divisions of the abdomen, body planes and positional and directional terms.

Medical Terminology 200 – 12 Weeks
This course will examine the anatomy and physiology of the digestive, urinary and cardiovascular systems and how they function within the human body. Students will learn terms specific to these systems and then examine pathological conditions and clinical procedures associated with each.

Medical Terminology 300 – 12 Weeks
This course will examine the anatomy and physiology of the musculoskeletal, male and female reproductive systems and how they function within the human body. Students will learn terms specific to these systems and then examine pathological conditions and clinical procedures associated with each. Students will briefly examine the field of Pharmacology and learn abbreviations related to Pharmacology, various administration routes of drugs and several different drug categories.

Medical Office Procedures – 12 Weeks
This course will examine the various responsibilities of a Medical Administrative Assistant: scheduling appointments, filing and organizing information, maintaining office supplies and accurate financial records. Students will format various medical reports, letters and memos.

Medical Transcription – 6 Weeks
This course examines the transcription of various medical documents. Documents may include letters, memos, radiology reports, consultation reports, operative reports and discharge summaries. Formatting requirements for this part of the course allow for some variation in which the student may use a variety of forms, i.e.: block format, modified block, report etc. Proofreading is essential: checking for spelling, grammar and punctuation are all vital parts of Medical Transcription.

Microsoft Word – 12 Weeks
This course provides students with the skills and knowledge to utilize Microsoft Word. Students will learn to edit text, check spelling and grammar, print documents, work with document views, manage styles and utilize document themes, merge documents and data sources, insert quick parts in documents, utilize newsletter-style columns, work with comments and revisions, insert drawing objects and graphics, utilize smart art and insert headers and footers.

Advanced Microsoft Word – 6 Weeks
Students will acquire the skills and knowledge to utilize Advanced Microsoft Office Word’s interface including creating and editing text and revising documents. Students will have the ability to create and manage professional documents using mail merge, macros, graphics, advanced tables, formulas, breaks, tabs, forms and subdocuments.

Microsoft Excel – 6 Weeks
This course provides students with the skills and knowledge to utilize Microsoft Excel. Students will learn to create a simple worksheet by entering labels and values, build a worksheet using copy and paste, fill and autofill, find/replace, column width and row height, hide columns and rows and copy cell formatting, insert and delete columns and rows, create formulas and use functions such as Average, Max, Sum, NOW, IF, Vlookup and Dfunction, filter databases using Auto Filter, Criteria and Extract, work with cell references including relative, absolute and mixed, format cells using number formats and changing alignment, use chart wizard to format, size, move, edit, save and print a chart, protect, save and print worksheets, charts and formulas.

Communications – 6 Weeks
This course develops basic language and communication skills. Business letters, reports and interpersonal skills are addressed as communication becomes increasingly important in the shrinking global marketplace.

Keyboarding Certificate
A keyboarding certificate will be issued upon completion of the program, showing Words per Minute with Errors.
